POLJE U PLAMENU

BURNING FILED

Most of the works present the field in Bosnia and Herzegovina which is supposed to be mine one day, as a family inheritance. The main work, video Burning Field is recorded in real time, showing the intentional burning of the field. The slowly burning landscape is visible as the daylight fades away.

The fire, in this case, presents a metaphor of rebirth and potential and the whole video takes characteristics of a self portrait of the artist. We burn crops and weeds on our fields after the autumn harvest, an annual (illegal) process to clear and fertilize the land for the next year, or at least we believe it to do so.

Our relationship to landscape often speaks of a longing for the land we are familiar with, which was, or is ours, and has defined our sense of ourselves. Through living in it, landscape becomes part of us, just as we are part of it. With this work, I am asking what my responsibility is towards my heritage and inheritance and to the memory and past that are incorporated into this landscape.

I want to engage the viewer in a moment when memories, presumptions, hopes and distractions connect. The longer one watches the more intense their anxiety and lethargy becomes and this duration becomes a coefficient of the weight of the field.
