Armija umetnika u Videoparku

Takmičarska festivalska celina „Granice“ predstavila je radove dvadesetak mlađih autora u formi animiranog filma, procesualnog i narativnog videa, dokumentarnog i eksperimentalnog filma, underground filma, do savremenih digitalnih audio-vizuelnih formi.

Army of artists at Videopark

Slađana Petrović Varagić

Due to the perceived dysfunctionality of the institutional framework, which demonstrates the indifference of the system to new ways of producing and presenting contemporary visual art, it is often the case that artists are joined in collectives and coherent groups that aim to change their environment over the longer term. Various forms of art collectives arise in response to certain circumstances on a broader social plane and often arise from the need to establish the conditions for performing artistic production and a greater presence on the stage. The formation of a micro-community of artists is often conditioned by the minimal common values shared and represented by its members, be it aesthetic and ideological views, methodologies of action or very pragmatic reasons such as the use of shared production resources. Gatherings of artists who share some of these shared values in the so-called the outskirts, in cities away from art academies, museums, galleries, and large exhibitions, where institutions are quite stalled in following contemporary tendencies in the field of visual art, is of great importance for the environment itself, for artists and audiences. In November 2016, the Association of Visual Artists of Uzice (UVUU) was formed, with the clear aim of „conquering“ the space of the former barracks „Fourth Regiment“ in Uzice, thus establishing a new space for the production and presentation of contemporary visual art. In cooperation with the administration of the City of Uzice and numerous organizations and individuals who have provided support, the space that has been abandoned for decades has been cleaned. With the establishment of a system of art studios as joint resources for the production of contemporary art, as well as the exhibition space of the Reflector Gallery with a permanent exhibition program, a new center was opened, a new gathering place for not only local artists, but equally artists from the domestic and international scene. The Reflector Gallery has, in a short time, become a very prominent non-institutional space for contemporary visual art, equally important to local artists from Uzice and the surrounding area, but also to the wider scene, which is facing continuous turbulence within the gallery system.

The Association of Visual Artists of Uzice (UVUU) has established the infrastructure for organizing public events, exhibit educational programs, and festivals. In addition to the regular program that the gallery implements, there are frequent accompanying programs and projects that contribute to the refinement of the space of the former military facility, transforming it into a place for meeting, getting to know and sharing experiences of young creators from all over the world in the field of contemporary art. One such project was the Videopark Contemporary Art Festival, which took place during August 2018. Videopark Festival, as a UVUU project proposal, was one of ten winners of the 2017 Centrifuge Contest within Superste.net, and its aim was to present contemporary practices in the field of video, animation and motion pictures in this environment. One of the intentions of this festival was to point out the insufficient affirmation of this kind of artistic expression outside the major art centers, large exhibitions, and festivals. The space of the former barracks and its courtyard proved to be the perfect place to organize such events. The official program of the festival, on four consecutive nights in the park in front of the barracks, featured 19 video works, animated, documentary and experimental films by a total of 19 authors from the country and abroad, selected by a selection jury. The artwork in the form of videos that came to the competition was united by the thematic end of this year’s festival – „Borders / Boundaries“. Since art is constantly pushing boundaries and responding to different social phenomena, the Videopark Festival has sought to re-examine the nature of real or imaginary boundaries, to expose their causes and to provide different views of the artist on this phenomenon. Within the accompanying programs of the Videopark festival, lectures by director and visual artist Milos Tomic were held: a couple of films and a couple of stories, and artists Ivan Petrovic: Documentary, appropriation, revolutionization…, as well as screenings of films by director Milutin Petrovic and short documentaries filmed during the International Student Film Camp „Interaction“.

Since the 1960s, video artists, curators, producers, organizers of various artistic events and educators have struggled to promote and institutionalize video. The video medium was embraced by cultural institutions, galleries, cultural centers, museums, and one of the strategies in the fight for affirmation of video media was the organization of video art festivals, workshops, lectures. Although we have long come to a position where we do not classify artistic production depending on the technical characteristics of the medium in which the artist excels, nevertheless certain environments have shown a conservative attitude towards adopting video art, remaining exclusively close to traditional media, most often finding an excuse in missing equipment and technical conditions. Following the thematic framework of the Videopark festival, UVUU, in the spirit of collective enthusiasm, is pushing the boundaries in its midst and in the field of presenting contemporary art, allowing for technical and other conditions.

The competing festival unit „Borders“ presented the works of twenty younger authors in the form of the animated film, process and narrative video, documentary and experimental film, underground film, to contemporary digital audio-visual forms. The Videopark featured experiments in the field of aesthetic, political and subversive video facts, to the works that went into the field of film whether it is a play, or narrative form, or it was documentary storytelling, right down to modern hybrid structures. Of the works presented at the festival, the jury singled out three works, which were awarded with equal awards. One of them is the work Borderless – a short video of three authors from Bosnia and Herzegovina – Mila Panic, Selma Selman, and Sasa Tatic. Purified simple work, taken from a single shot, captures from the bottom view an act of kissing involving three people. Aimed to be broadcasted with constant repetition, this video work metaphorically, naively but authentically, speaks of breaking boundaries. The boundaries that the three artists „break“ with their video work can be recognized within geopolitical boundaries, more precisely as the invisible boundaries of the three territorial entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also universally as the limitations of mental or physical space that prevent any form of heterogeneous unity. The second award-winning work Hybrid, signed by two German artists Bianca Kennedy and Felix Kraus, is a narrative, apocalyptic video structure in which artists examine the role of man in a destructive dystopian environment. And the third work, which is as well rated as the previous two, is the work of Nenad Nedelkov Stretching of Daily Life. A specific form of video collage, interesting montages in the form of a triptych within which the author contemplates by recording simple everyday situations, playing with contrasting sound solutions, sources of sound output and its intensity.

Only one of the many programs of Reflector Gallery, managed by UVUU, during 2018 was the Videopark Festival. When all other regular and extraordinary programs held in this space are considered and counted, it can be concluded in the spirit of the place that the Reflector Gallery has gathered a real army of artists. Only one part of this army, during the four hot August days in the shade of Videopark, has cleared new borders and established new networks, exchanged ideas and opened discussions, presented its artistic production, but also made this city a better and more beautiful place to live.
